- Hi all. I currently use a Zoom 28.8 faxModem model 279 (pretty sure that is
- the model number) and have a few questions/comments for fellow users. I live
- in Hawaii and when I connect to my local ISP I am lucky to get a 24K connect.
- Out of 100 connects 4 will be 24K, 20 will be at 21.6K and 40 will be a 19.2K
- while the others will fall anywhere between 14.4 and 16.8. Some of this is
- due to the poor phone lines which we have on the Island, but I think some of
- it is due to the modem itself. In the Feb 96 PC World magazine, a writer
- wrote a thanks to the staff of the magazine which he said told him about an
- EPROM upgrade chip from Zoom (he also referenced a Nov issue of the same
- magazine which turned him to the upgrade). After doing some research at the
- PC World site I located the article I think he was talking about.
-
- In a nutshell, the article tells about the people at PC World doing some tests
- on modems and the found that many were only getting connects at 24K or 21.6K
- instead of 28.8K. The also said that most of these modems had a Rockwell Data
- Pump R6682-26 with modem controller chip L39XX-XX with Firmware previous to
- ver 1.3. Just curious about other users of the Zoom V.34I and there connect
- speeds. I sent a email to Zoom on their web page today and will let you all
- know what I hear back from them about the EPROM upgrade. Thanks for your
- time.
